Materials: | Proper outdoor clothing: supportive runners, rain coat, active shirts/pants, hat, and backpack. Plastic Baggie to hold picked sage. Packed balanced-lunch. Smudge Kit. Poster of Traditional Medicine SageHand sanitizer. Gift for the elder/knowledge keeper. |
LESSON ACTIVITIES | |
Introduction/Hook: | The teacher will show a video on discussing sage and proper treatment to the environment. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KtVLGh2gggI The teacher will discuss proper behaviour and expectations. The teacher will do attendance to get students onto the bus. |
Body: | The students will arrive at the hiking site. The teacher will remind students of proper behaviour and expectations while on the nature walk. The students will observe their surroundings as they complete the nature walk. The teacher will ask questions “what do you see?” “how do you feel in nature?” “should we take without giving?” Class arrives at the end of nature walk where Sage is present. The students will pick their own Sage and rub it in their hands and smell their Sage. The students will ask questions they may have about the Sage.The students will place their Sage in their baggie to bring with them. The class will eat their lunch before tidying up/gathering their belongings. |
Closure: | The class will participate in a Smudge using Sage with an elder or knowledge keeper.The students will listen to the elder/knowledge keeper about the importance of the smudge and giving back to the land.The class will offer the gift to the elder/knowledge keeper to thank them for their time and sharing of knowledge.The class will begin the journey back to the bus to return to school. Once back at school, the teacher will ask students to share their favourite moments or something they found interesting. |
